A first instrument that sounds as good as it looks: twelve metal bars in rainbow order on a wooden frame, with two wooden beaters to play them.
Three-year-olds start by hitting every bar in turn and discovering that the colours go up the scale with the pitch. Soon come first tunes, picked out by colour, and then the whole family is roped in for a concert.
Playing a xylophone is good for hand-eye coordination and rhythm, and a tuned instrument gives a child something true to listen to rather than just a noise. It lives happily on a shelf between performances.
