►About the Authors: Susan Rennie is a writer, researcher and lexicographer. She was Editor of the Dictionary of the Scots Language and the Historical Thesaurus of Scots projects at the Universities of Dundee and Glasgow. She has worked on The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary and Chambers Dictionary, and is the chief editor of the Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary.
Roald Dahl (1916–1990) was a British author known for his distinctive and imaginative children's books. Born in Llandaff, Wales, to Norwegian parents, Dahl's early life was marked by the loss of his father and sister. After school, he worked for the Shell Oil Company and later served as a fighter pilot in World War II, where he began writing.
Dahl's writing career took off with works such as James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, celebrated for their dark humour, whimsical characters, and inventive plots. His stories often featured children triumphing over cruel adults, capturing the imaginations of readers worldwide. Quentin Blake is a renowned British illustrator and children's book author, best known for his long-standing collaboration with writer Roald Dahl. Born in Sidcup, Kent, Blake displayed an early talent for drawing, having his first work published at the age of 16. He studied English Literature at the University of Cambridge and later trained as a teacher at the University of London, before studying at the Chelsea School of Art.
