Solveig lives on an island where white mountains echo with ancient stories of snow and ice. And yet her world has a fiery heart, created from the ashes of exploding stars and cosmic heat... The Flickering Fires is the story of fire - how it has shaped Earth and the lives of all its inhabitants, from the first sparks of creation to the harnessing of fire for cooking, protection and warmth. As we journey through millennia, we see its powerful force through the Copper Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age all the way to present day. From tools to tablets, the steam engine to rockets - fire is at the heart of it all.
“Now we have another story, an absolutely extraordinary one, about fire and how humans have used it to transform. [...] Exploring fire from the very first sparks to the harnessing of its power this book is compelling and fascinating.”
“Stunning. . . This wonderful story comes with Baker-Smith's stunning full and double-page illustrations that are virtually another story in their own right - there is so much detail and so many extra talking points in every drawing. Very strongly recommended.”
