A first peg puzzle a toddler can actually manage. Twelve forest animals drawn by Sarah Betz, each with a chunky wooden peg sized for a small fist, and each with its own snug space in the base.
The clever touch is underneath: a coloured dot in each space matches the main colour of the animal that lives there, so little ones get a hint without being told. The fox, the mouse, the owl and their friends come out, go back, come out again, and the 'I did it' moment arrives sooner than with most puzzles.
Lifting, turning and placing the pieces builds fine motor control and hand-eye coordination, and the animals are a ready excuse for naming, sounds and a chat about who lives in the woods.
A lovely first puzzle and a dependable first-birthday gift.
