A farmhouse shape sorter in Ingela P. Arrhenius's bright retro style, with eight chunky wooden figures, animals and farm folk, each waiting for its own opening in the roof and walls.
Once posted, the figures slide down an inside slope and out through the tilting door at the front, so a toddler can get them back without a grown-up. The hinge on that door is a strip of elastic, which means no pinched fingers. Away from the sorting, the figures are characters and the house is where they live.
Matching a shape to its hole takes concentration, patience and a fair bit of turning things round, which is exactly the work two-year-old hands need. It is sturdy enough to be dropped and pretty enough to be left out. A favourite gift for a first or second birthday.
